Emmanuel Eboué: Career highlights, divorce, and life after football of the former Arsenal and Cote D’Ivoire Defender

In an interview after his first wife divorced him, Emmanuel Eboué, contrary to public opinion that he was poor and had lost everything he had worked for after the divorce, stated that the news was not true. Although he admitted that he lost his houses, cars, money, and access to his children, he was able to move on after praying to God.

Emmanuel Eboué is a former Ivorian and Arsenal football player who played as a defender during his active days. Eboué began his career in Côte d’Ivoire with ASEC Mimosas before moving to Europe to join Belgian side Beveren in 2002. The Ivorian defender spent most of his club career at Arsenal under former manager Arsene Wenger, who brought him to the club from Belgium.

Eboué was known for his tireless runs down the flanks and his contributions in attack, even though he did his primary assignment: defending, quite well. He spent seven seasons at the North London club and helped the Gunners reach three finals, including the 2006 UEFA Champions League, which ended 2-1 in favour of Barcelona.

Emmanuel Eboué was part of Côte d’Ivoire’s “golden generation” as he played alongside the legendary striker, Didier Drogba, Kolo Toure, Yaya Toure, Gervinho, and Salomon Kalou, among others. He represented the Elephants at two FIFA World Cup tournaments and five Africa Cup of Nations tournaments. Unfortunately, his generation couldn’t win any of the editions of Africa’s premier tournament until 2015, when he wasn’t selected for the competition.

Despite a quite successful career, Emmanuel Eboué’s post-football life was hit with challenges as his Belgian wife, with whom he had three kids with filed for divorce and won, resulting to the loss of his properties and access to his children.

However, the former Galatasaray defender appears to have overcome those challenges after setting up his football academy in Côte d’Ivoire and taking up a role as a scout for the Turkish champions. Emmanuel Eboué also found love again as he married his former girlfriend while he was at ASEC Mimosas.

BREAKING: Lionel Messi Acquires Spanish Club UE Cornellà in Full Ownership Deal

This post traces the background, career, net worth, challenges, and post-football life of former Arsenal and Côte d’Ivoire right full-back defender Emmanuel Eboué, and other important information about him in recent years.

Emmanuel Eboué Background

The former Ivorian defender was born on June 4, 1983, in Abidjan, the capital city of Côte d’Ivoire. The defender grew up in the city playing football just like thousands of average kids on the streets of Abidjan who nursed the hope of becoming a professional footballer. Luckily, Emmanuel Eboué made it to unarguably Côte d’Ivoire’s finest club side, ASEC Mimosa, where he spent just a year (2001-2002) before moving to Europe.

Emmanuel Eboué joined KSK Beveren in 2002 and spent three seasons at the club, where he played over 70 matches and scored four goals. Eboué’s talent didn’t go unnoticed as European clubs contested for his signature. He eventually joined Arsene Wenger at Arsenal in 2004.

Big move to Arsenal

Emmanuel Eboué’s Arsenal career began quietly after his signing from Beveren in 2004. His debut was in an FA Cup match against Stoke City, but he spent much of his first season in the reserves, making just one Premier League appearance. Even though he was selected for the final, he contributed to Arsenal’s 2004–05 FA Cup triumph over Manchester United with three cup appearances, marking his gradual integration into the star-studded Arsenal team, which had his countryman, Kolo Abib Touré, Patrick Vieira, Antonio Reyes, Cesc Fabregas, Ashley Cole and Dennis Bergkamp, among others.

The 2005–06 season was Eboué’s breakthrough. Initially a backup defender, he impressed greatly when an injury to Lauren thrust him into the starting right-back role. His energetic performances, including his outstanding Champions League displays against Real Madrid and Juventus, earned commendations from Arsène Wenger, who even compared him to the great Brazilian legend Garrincha. Emmanuel Eboué’s run of impressive performances earned him a start in the 2006 Champions League final, as he cemented his place in the team.

Despite a strong start to the 2006–07 season, where he won Arsenal’s Player of the Month in September, Eboué struggled with injuries. Persistent ankle problems kept him on the sidelines for months, though he still made impacts, including a goal against Hamburg in the Champions League. He returned in time to feature in the League Cup final and signed a new long-term deal, showing Arsène Wenger’s belief in him.

Eboué’s decline

The arrival of French defender Barcary Signal in the 2007-2008 season saw Emmanuel Eboué move to the right wing, where he did considerably well. He scored his first Premier League goal in his new position against Bolton, but the following season brought struggles. A below-average performance against Wigan Athletic led to boos from frustrated fans, though he later redeemed himself with vital goals, including a brace against Blackburn.

Emmanuel Eboué’s final years at Arsenal were mixed. He scored important goals, like his strike against Porto in the Champions League, but also faced criticism, notably for conceding a costly penalty against Liverpool in 2011. Despite flashes of brilliance, his influence on the team’s consistency faded, and after 27 appearances in his last season, his time at Arsenal came to an end sadly without winning any major trophy after the arrival of his countryman, Gervinho, who was given his number 27 shirt.

Move to Galatasaray

After leaving Arsenal in 2011, Emmanuel Eboué signed for Galatasaray in a €3.5 million deal, earning €2.35 million per season. Arsène Wenger had advised him to leave, warning that playing time at Arsenal would be limited. Emmanuel Eboué’s spell at the Turkish club was marked by feelings, even though he won a couple of trophies with the team. His debut came in a 2-0 loss, but he soon became a key player, scoring his first goal in a 1-0 win over Gençlerbirliği and helping Galatasaray secure the Turkish league title in his first season.

However, his time in Turkey wasn’t without controversy. During a heated match against Beşiktaş, Eboué was targeted with objects thrown from the crowd. Despite this, he remained a crucial part of the team, winning the Turkish Super Cup in 2012 and forming a formidable partnership with Didier Drogba, who joined in 2013.

He delivered one of his standout moments in the Champions League, scoring a sublime long-range goal against Real Madrid—though Galatasaray ultimately lost. The team defended their league title that season, but Eboué and Drogba faced racist abuse from Fenerbahçe fans, which went unpunished.

Foreign player restrictions controversially excluded Eboué from the first team in the 2014-2015 season and forced him to play with the U21s. The club did not renew his contract, ending his challenging but successful time in Turkey.

Return to England and post-football career

Emmanuel Eboué signed a short-term deal with Sunderland in March 2016 with the hope of reviving his career after a turbulent time in Turkey. Sadly, just weeks later, another setback hit Eboué when FIFA banned him from football for one year because he failed to pay a former agent. Sunderland released him without playing a match for the club.

His attempts to return to the game continued—training with Hungary’s Ferencváros in 2017, but a contract never materialised. Later that year, a move to Northern Cyprus collapsed after medical tests revealed blood-related issues.

At his lowest point, former club Galatasaray offered him a lifeline—coaching their U-14 team—after manager Fatih Terim learned of his financial troubles. He took the job, marking a new chapter in his life off the pitch.

Unlucky years with Côte d’Ivoire

Despite playing in one of the most talented eras of Côte d’Ivoire’s football between 2004 and 2013, Emmanuel Eboué and his generation didn’t win any trophies. The closest they came was in 2012, when they lost to Zambia on penalties in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations. He represented the Elephants at two FIFA World Cup tournaments and five Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.

Emmanuel Eboué’s marriage and divorce

Emmanuel Eboué is a devout Christian and has never hidden his faith. However, the former Arsenal star’s belief in God was tested off the pitch. Eboué faced immense challenges especially in his marriage. He married his Belgian wife, Aurélie Bertrand, before his rise at Arsenal. Together, they had three children, but their marriage ended in a painful divorce that left Eboué in financial crisis as he lost almost everything football gave him.

At one point, reports claimed that he had lost nearly everything—his homes, cars, and even access to his kids. In a 2017 interview, he revealed he was homeless and struggling financially, blaming bad investments managed under his ex-wife’s control. By 2019, he opened up about his battle with depression, showing how deeply the ordeal affected him.

Eboué later clarified that media exaggerated claims of his extreme poverty, but he admitted he faced difficult times.

“When [people] say Emmanuel Eboue lost everything, it’s not nice,” the 40-year-old said, as reported by Citi Sports.

“Because I had a divorce [case] and they [court] said my wife won, they gave her all my properties – my two houses, money, and the cars that I had in England.

“I wasn’t worried about it because I expected that she was going to use it to take care of my children.

“When they [court] said that, I was very disappointed… To be honest, for the first time, I was very down, but after that, I prayed and forgot about all of that.”

Who is Emmanuel Eboué’s wife?

Emmanuel Eboué’s wife is Stéphanie Boedé. After a painful divorce from his ex-wife Aurélie Bertrand, Emmanuel Eboué found love again with his former girlfriend, Stéphanie Boedé. In a touching reflection, Eboué shared that Stéphanie “fell in love with me when I had nothing,” highlighting her loyalty during his toughest times.

The couple celebrated their love with both a traditional and legal wedding in Abidjan, surrounded by close friends and former national team colleagues, including Amara Diané, Bonaventure Kalou, and Kader Keïta as he narrated how he met her:

“The past 14 months had been tough for me. You all know my story. But today, I am starting all over again and with the love of my life, Stéphanie,” Eboué told his guests. I met Stéphanie while playing at Asec. I had nothing then. I didn’t even know I would play in Europe but she accepted and stayed with me. Our paths have crossed again and with joy.”

Emmanuel Eboué Suicide

Eboué confessed that he had thought about suicide after his divorce before he took up the job as a scout for Galatasaray in an interview.

“Imagine, after almost two decades of hard labour you lose everything you have. Even your kids, you are not permitted to see them.

“You think of the journey you have covered. You know it’s impossible to start all over again. What are you living for?”

Emmanuel Eboué is quite active on Instagram where he shares post of his activities. He has over 135K followers on his page.
