Super Eagles legend Odemwingie slams Atalanta for blocking Lookman transfer

Former Super Eagles forward Peter Odemwingie has voiced his strong disapproval of Atalanta’s decision to refuse Ademola Lookman’s transfer during the summer window.

The 27-year-old was at the center of a major transfer saga after a fallout with the club’s hierarchy over his desire to leave.

Several European clubs, including Serie A rivals Inter Milan, explored a deal for the reigning CAF Player of the Year, but Atalanta stood firm in their refusal to strengthen a domestic rival.

Odemwingie believes the club’s stance was unfair to the player, who delivered an outstanding season.

Speaking to Footy-Africa, the 43-year-old ex-Super Eagles star made his feelings clear.

“Lookman has exceeded every expectation since joining Atalanta. The fair thing would have been to let him pursue the path he desired. They should have allowed him to follow his dream.”

Odemwingie argued that Lookman’s contributions to the team should have been rewarded with a move.

“He’s played three full seasons, given his all, and even delivered European glory. What more could they have asked for? It doesn’t reflect well when a player who has carried the club on his shoulders is held back at this point in his career.”

Despite being denied his desired move, Lookman has been included in the club’s Champions League squad, suggesting he could be reintegrated into the team.

The forward is currently with Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles squad, preparing for crucial World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa.
