Former Super Eagles captain, John Obi Mikel has called for Nigerian football icons such as Nwankwo Kanu and Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha to be given leadership roles in the country’s football administration.
Speaking on his Obi One Podcast, Mikel criticised the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), accusing its current leadership of failing to provide the right environment for the national team to succeed.
The ex-Chelsea midfielder argued that players of Kanu and Okocha’s pedigree, with their international experience and deep understanding of the game, would bring credibility and direction to Nigerian football.
He stressed that those who have represented the country at the highest level know what it takes to ensure the Super Eagles and other national teams thrive.

Mikel’s comments followed Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with South Africa in Bloemfontein during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, a result that has raised concerns over the Super Eagles’ chances of reaching the tournament. He warned that if Nigeria fails to qualify, the NFF board should step aside for more competent leadership.
His call reflects growing frustration among fans and stakeholders about the state of Nigerian football, with many echoing the need for reforms and greater involvement of ex-internationals in decision-making.
