AFCON title won’t make up for World Cup miss – Mikel Obi

Former Super Eagles captain Mikel Obi believes that winning the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco in January won’t make up for Nigeria missing the World Cup for the second time in a row.

The former midfielder, who led the team to the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa says missing out on the 2026 World Cup is a monumental disaster and humiliation to the country.

Mikel Obi added that failing to qualify for the World Cup means the Super Eagles are no longer giants of Africa because they are meant to be at the biggest competitions in the World if they truly are.

An emotional Mikel Obi shared his thoughts on his podcast “The Obi One Podcast” in the aftermath of the Super Eagles’ loss to DR Congo in the final of the CAF World Cup playoffs on Sunday.

Nigeria lost 4-3 on penalties to DR Congo after the match ended one-all after regulation and extra-time at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat.

Meanwhile, ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations set to kick off in Morocco on December 21, Mikel Obi advocates that the team must move forward and regroup as he called for the injection of fresh players in the squad.
