3 reasons why Chelsea can grab a win over Barcelona

Chelsea take on Barcelona in a crunch UEFA champions league tie on Tuesday night at Stamford Bridge.

Both teams have been in decent form in the league but have struggled recently in the competition with no wins in their last two matches.

Chelsea and Barcelona’s rivalry is probably one of the biggest in European football especially after the seemingly controversial second leg semi-final between both sides at Stamford Bridge in 2009.

The two teams go into the match without overwhelming favourites even though the odds slightly favours Barcelona with Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, Marcus Rashford and Ferran Torres all available for selection.

This post examines three reasons why Chelsea can grab a win over Barcelona

1. History favours Chelsea

Chelsea have a solid record against Barcelona in the competition. The Blues have lost only one of their last nine Champions League meetings with Barcelona (with six draws), and Barcelona have won just once in eight away games at Stamford Bridge.

This psychological boost, combined with 2009 semi-final controversy at Stamford Bridge could inspire Chelsea to secure a vital result in the league phase.

2. Home Advantage

Chelsea have been strong at home in the  Champions League this season, beating Benfica 1-0 and thrashing Ajax 5-1. This  showcases their ability to make their ground uncomfortable for visitors.

In addition, English teams have also won nine of their last 10 Champions League matches against Spanish sides, including four straight wins without conceding a goal.

This worrying start could play into Chelsea’s favor against a Barcelona team that has struggled away in this fixture over the years.

3. Barcelona’s poor defense.

Barcelona have been very shaky at the back this season. The Catalan Giants have conceded 15 goals in 13 La Liga matches and seven in just four Champions League games – the highest in a single match was against Club Brugge on matchday four in Brussels where they conceded three.

Hansi Flick’s men have just one clean sheet in their last 11 outings overall courtesy of their high defensive line which is vulnerable to pace and quick transitions.

Chelsea’s quick wingers like Pedro Neto, Alejandro Garnacho will look to capitalise on this potentially leading to counter-attacking opportunities.
