Rivers United are the new leaders of the Nigeria Premier Football League after the Pride of Rivers picked maximum points in a rescheduled match.

Finidi George’s troops returned to the Adokiye Amiesimika Stadium in Monday evening following the win away at Plateau United last week.

Rivers United came into the tie with the opportunity to top the table after Nasarawa United dropped two points in Jos on Sunday.

The Pride of Rivers secured a  win over Wikki Tourists to go top of the table with two points clear with a match outstanding.

Taofeek Otaniyi scored the only goal of the tie in the 19th minute to give the hosts maximum points and a clean sheet.

In the other fixture, Ikorodu City missed the chance to go level on points with Nasarawa United as the Oga Boys were held to a stalemate at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena.

Despite their dominance, Ikorodu City couldn’t neutralise the solid defense of Katsina United as the match ended goalless.

Rivers United lead the log with 33 points while Nasarawa United are in second spot with two points less having played a match more than the leaders.

The win over Wikki Tourists extended Rivers United unbeaten streak in the league to nine matches.
