Chelsea Captain Reece James Ruled Out of PSG Clash as Defensive Crisis Deepens

Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior has confirmed a major blow for the Blues ahead of their Champions League showdown with Paris Saint-Germain, revealing that captain Reece James will miss the match due to a hamstring injury.

The 26-year-old England international, who only recently committed his long-term future to the club with a new contract, sustained the injury during Chelsea’s 1-0 Premier League defeat to Newcastle United on Saturday.

The loss of James comes at a critical time as Chelsea attempts to overturn a 5-2 first-leg deficit against the reigning European champions at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.

Rosenior Fears “Serious” Setback for James

Speaking at Monday’s pre-match press conference, Rosenior admitted the full extent of the captain’s injury is currently unknown, though the initial signs are concerning.

We don’t know the full extent of the injury, but he will be out for tomorrow’s game. It could be (serious). With a hamstring injury, it’s never great”

The manager noted the injury “could be serious,” adding that “with a hamstring injury, it’s never great”.

James is scheduled for a medical scan to determine the length of his expected absence, which could potentially span several weeks.

Fitness Doubts Over Gusto and Jörgensen

The defensive selection headache for Rosenior is further complicated by issues surrounding right-back Malo Gusto and goalkeeper Filip Jörgensen.

The French defender missed Monday’s training session due to illness. Rosenior indicated a late decision will be made on his availability for Tuesday’s match.

The goalkeeper is also set for a scan after reporting a groin issue following the first leg in Paris.

In a  boost for the squad, Brazilian forward Estevao Willian has returned to full training after a hamstring layoff and will be included in the matchday group. Additionally, winger Pedro Neto is eligible to play after escaping a UEFA ban for an incident involving a ball boy during the first leg.
