Sporting Lisbon sealed an impressive “remontada” over Norwegian side Bodo Glimt to progress into the last eight of the UEFA Champions League.
The Portuguese champions overturned a 3-0 deficit over Bodo Glimt in Lisbon on Tuesday night in front of a packed Estadio Jose Alvalade.
Sporting Lisbon knew they needed a bright start to give the fans hope of staging a comeback against the visitors.
However, the first goal didn’t come until the 34th minute courtesy of Goncalo Ignacio. The defender placed a header to Trincao’s cross from a corner to give the host the lead.
Pedro Goncalves doubled the lead in the 61st minute while Colombian forward Luis Suarez scored the third from the penalty spot in the 78th minute to draw Sporting Lisbon level on aggregate.
Bodo Glimt’s coach, Kjetil Knutsen made a couple of changes to his side as the tie went into extra-time.
However, Sporting Lisbon with momentum on their side, went for the jugular as Maximiliano Araujo scored the fourth in the 92nd minute of extra time.
Twenty-year-old forward Rafael Nel came off the bench to seal the five-star performance as the tie ended 5-0.
For the first time since the 1963/64 season, Sporting Lisbon overturned a three-goal deficit in a UEFA club competition.
