Nottingham Forest edge sloppy Midtjylland on spotkicks to break 30-year jinx

Nottingham Forest qualified for the last eight of a European competition for the first time in over three decades on Thursday night after beating Danish side Midtjylland on penalties.

Having lost the first leg at home in Nottingham last week, the English side needed a good start to turn the tie around and they did.

The Trick Trees put up a commendable performance as they overturned the one-goal deficit before sealing the win via penalties.

Nottingham Forest won the game 2-1 in regular time courtesy of goals from Nicolas Dominguez and a brilliant strike from Ryan Yates.

However, Croatian defender Martin Erlic gave the hosts hope of qualifying in regular time as he buried a one-time shot inside the box into the roof of the net after Nottingham Forest couldn’t clear their lines.

It ended 2-2 on aggregate after extra time. A VAR review chalked off a late winner for the visitors as Ryan Yates was judged to be in an offside position before the goal.

While the hosts were unlucky and unfortunate from six yards, Viktor Pereira’s Nottingham Forest were ruthless as they sealed a 3-0 win on penalties to progress into the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

In other results, Celta Vigo after a 1-1 draw in Vigo against Lyon, went ahead to secure a 2-0 win in France to seal a spot in the last eight.
