Senegal’s Terenga Lions reach landmark World Cup record after devouring Iraq

The Terenga Lions of Senegal reached a landmark record after an impressive victory over Iraq in their last group stage match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The reigning African champions, condemned to win by a stretch to stand a chance of qualifying for the knockout stage didn’t hold back against the Iraqis.

Senegal had earlier lost their opening two matches against France and Norway and needed an outright win to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams.

After an unconvincing display in the first half, the Terenga Lions put up a better display in the second half as they put their opponents to the sword.

Ismaila Sarr also set a record for most goals scored by a Senegalese at the World Cup – four breaking the late Papa Bouba Diop’s record.

Villarreal’s Pape Gueye bagged a brace while Everton’s Iliman N’Diaye, Ismaila Sarr and Habib Diarra got on the scoresheet in the 5-0 win.
