Victor Osimhen is set to be named the new captain of Galatasaray following Mauro Icardi’s departure from the Turkish champions. Multiple sources in Turkey have confirmed that the Nigerian striker is the leading candidate to inherit the armband.
Icardi left Galatasaray after the two parties failed to agree on terms for a new contract. His exit brings an end to a four-year spell that saw him become one of the club’s most influential players in recent years.
Head coach Okan Buruk has already signaled his intentions regarding Osimhen’s leadership role. According to Forza Cimbom, Buruk stated that the club wants to give Osimhen responsibility, adding that it will be important for him to be among the new captains chosen this summer.
Victor Osimhen is not a stranger to leadership responsibilities. He currently serves as one of the vice-captains of Nigeria’s Super Eagles and wore the armband during the AFCON semi-final penalty shootout defeat to host nation Morocco.
The 27-year-old talisman has established himself as a dressing-room leader since arriving at Galatasaray. His work ethic, goal-scoring record, and ability to motivate teammates have made him a natural successor to Icardi.
Since joining the club, Osimhen has fired Galatasaray to back-to-back league titles. He has scored 59 goals in 74 appearances, cementing his status as one of the Süper Lig’s most feared forwards and also one of the top strikers in Europe.
The captaincy plan also forms part of Galatasaray’s broader effort to ward off transfer interest from Europe’s biggest clubs. Several European clubs, including Juventus and Manchester United, have both been linked with a move for the striker over the last few months.
Handing Osimhen the armband would make him one of the few Nigerian players to captain a major European club. It also signals Galatasaray’s intention to build their long-term project around him.
