Belgian side KRC Genk have completed the signing of Nigerian striker Rafiu Durosinmi from Italian club Pisa SC, with the 23-year-old putting pen to paper on a four-year contract at the Cegeka Arena.
Durosinmi becomes Genk’s second signing of the summer transfer window as the club strengthens its squad ahead of the new campaign.
The Nigerian forward arrives with a growing reputation as a prolific goalscorer, having enjoyed a successful spell with Czech side Viktoria Plzeň before his move to Italy. During his time in the Czech Republic, Durosinmi scored 35 goals and provided 10 assists in 86 appearances, impressing both in domestic competitions and on the European stage.
Across his professional career, the striker has recorded 54 goals and 17 assists in 150 appearances.
Genk’s Head of Football, Dimitri de Condé, expressed confidence that the Nigerian’s qualities align perfectly with the club’s playing philosophy.
“Rafiu is a striker whose qualities fit perfectly with the way KRC Genk want to play,” De Condé said.
“He’s a real presence in the penalty area, but he’s also technically strong and links up well with his teammates. He’s a classic number nine who can hold the ball up and bring others into play. We were looking for a profile that could make an immediate impact and help us compete at the top again. Rafiu ticks all those boxes.”
Durosinmi revealed that Genk’s ambition, style of play and reputation for developing players were major factors behind his decision to join the Belgian club.
The Super Eagles hopeful also disclosed that he sought the opinion of fellow Nigerian international Paul Onuachu, who previously enjoyed a successful spell at Genk before moving abroad.
According to Durosinmi, Onuachu’s glowing recommendation played a significant role in convincing him to make the switch.
“I want to be important for the team from day one, score goals and give everything in every game,” Durosinmi said.
“I spoke with Paul about the club. He told me so many great things about Genk, the supporters and the way the club works with its players. I’m proud to be a Genkie.”
Genk will hope Durosinmi can replicate the success of Onuachu, who became one of the most prolific strikers in the club’s history, as they aim to challenge for domestic honours in the upcoming season.
