Onyeka, Awoniyi feature as Arsenal brush Coventry City aside in Premier League opener

Frank Onyeka and Taiwo Awoniyi both featured for Coventry City as the newly promoted side suffered a 3-0 defeat to Arsenal in the opening match of the 2026/27 Premier League season at the Emirates Stadium on Friday night.

Onyeka started the match in Frank Lampard’s midfield, having joined Coventry permanently from Brentford in the summer after a productive loan spell that helped fire the Sky Blues to the Championship title. The Nigeria international was part of Coventry’s midfield set-up against a dominant Arsenal side, but the visitors struggled to get a foothold in the game as the champions dominated from start to finish.

Arsenal made a fast start against a Coventry side appearing in the Premier League for the first time in 25 years, taking the lead in the 14th minute when Riccardo Calafiori delivered a sharp ball into the box for Kai Havertz to finish calmly. The reigning champions doubled their advantage before half-time through Bukayo Saka, sending the Gunners in 2-0 up at the break and firmly in control of the contest.

Awoniyi, who completed his move to Coventry from Nottingham Forest just days before the fixture, was introduced from the bench in the 69th minute as Lampard looked for a spark going forward, replacing Ellis Simms up front. Jack Rudoni followed shortly after, coming on for Brandon Thomas-Asante as Coventry searched for a way back into the match.

Martin Odegaard sealed the tie by adding a third goal in the second half to complete the scoring and secure a comfortable opening-day victory, continuing the momentum they carried into the season following their 3-0 Community Shield win over Manchester City. The result means Mikel Arteta’s side began the defence of their Premier League title with maximum points, while Coventry suffered defeat in their first top-flight match since the 2000/01 season.

Despite the scoreline, Onyeka’s involvement throughout underlined his importance to Lampard’s plans as Coventry look to establish themselves in the Premier League, while Awoniyi will be eager to make his full debut and get off the mark in familiar territory, having scored three times against Arsenal during his four years at Nottingham Forest. Coventry will look to bounce back against Hull City next week at home.
