Nigeria’s Super Falcons will begin their campaign for qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games with a two-legged second-round fixture against Comoros in October.
Interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen has named a 28-player squad for the encounter, with captain Rasheedat Ajibade, goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, forwards Asisat Oshoala, Gift Monday and Uchenna Kanu among the established internationals called up.
Defenders Michelle Alozie, Shukurat Oladipo, Oluwatosin Demehin and Ashley Plumptre are also included, alongside midfielders Christy Ucheibe, Jennifer Echegini and Toni Payne.
The squad features several younger players, including Christiana Uzoma, Farida Abdulwahab, Tumininu Adeshina, Favour Nkwocha, Shakirat Moshood, Oluwakemi Adegbuyi and Janet Akekoromowei.
The invited players are expected to report to the team’s camp in Ijebu-Ode on Saturday, October 3, ahead of the first leg.
Both legs to be played in Ikenne
The first leg is scheduled for Friday, October 9, while the return leg will take place on Tuesday, October 13.
Both matches will be played at the Remo Stars Sports Stadium in Ikenne-Remo, Ogun State.
Comoros are the designated home side for the first leg, but the fixture has been moved to Nigeria because the island nation does not have a CAF-approved venue for international matches, according to the Nigeria Football Federation.
The Falcons will need to finish the two-legged tie ahead of Comoros on aggregate to progress to the next round.
Road to Los Angeles 2028
If Nigeria advance, they will face Morocco or DR Congo in the next qualifying round, scheduled for February and March 2027.
A successful campaign at that stage would lead to another round against one of Tunisia, Senegal, Benin Republic or Mali between October 4 and 12, 2027.
The final qualifying round is scheduled for November 23 to December 4, 2027, with potential opponents including Cameroon, Guinea, DR Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Algeria, Burkina Faso and the Central African Republic.
Only two African teams will qualify for the women’s football tournament at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
The Super Falcons returned to the Olympic Games at Paris 2024, ending a 16-year absence from the competition. Qualification for Los Angeles 2028 would see Nigeria make consecutive appearances at the women’s Olympic football tournament for the first time since Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008.
