Ademola Lookman has expressed his surprise and disappointment that his Nigerian compatriot Victor Boniface was not nominated for the 2024 CAF Men’s Player of the Year award.
Boniface had a stellar season with Bayer Leverkusen, scoring 21 goals in 34 appearances and helping the team win the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal titles.
Lookman believes Boniface’s impressive individual achievements and contributions to Leverkusen’s success warrant recognition.
“Obviously Boniface, my teammate, had an amazing season last year,” Lookman said.
“I think with his personal achievements, personal goals, and also winning two titles last year with Leverkusen.
“They were unbeaten in their league, special, maybe he could have been nominated for sure but you know I am not the one that makes the rules, you know.
Both stars faced off in the UEFA Europa League final, where Lookman scored an incredible hat-trick to lead Atalanta to their first-ever European trophy.
The 27-year-old is now the clear favourite to be crowned CAF Player of the Year for 2024.
