The Benin Republic’s Cheetahs defeated Libya 2-1 in an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.
This comes after the Super Eagles of Nigeria’s second group match resulted in a 0-0 draw away to the Amavubi of Rwanda.
Benin Republic bounce back from loss to Nigeria
Benin had a rocky start to the first half when playing in front of their home crowd.
Faisal Mansour Ali Saleh Al Badri gave Libya the lead in the ninth minute as he successfully converted a penalty kick.
The North Africans led by one goal at the half, and despite Gernot Rohr’s tactical adjustments, the home team was unable to overcome Libya.
With help from Junior Olaitan, Steve Mouine scored the equalizer in the 50th minute.
In the 62nd minute, Olaitan scored the second goal for Benin Republic after converting a penalty kick.
Libya made a late charge, but the hosts held on to win and pick up three points.
With the win, Benin Republic moved up to second position in Group D after losing to Nigeria in their first group match.
In contrast, Libya is at the bottom of the group after drawing their opening group match in Tripoli against Rwanda.
