Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso has given a fresh update on Victor Boniface’s injury citing that the player is on the right track to recovery.
Boniface sustained a muscle injury and declared out for the rest of the year after featuring for the Super Eagles during the November international break.
The 23-year-old striker played for 89 minutes in Nigeria’s 2-1 home loss to Rwanda in the final match of the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations qualification series in Uyo.
Since then, Boniface has missed three matches for the reigning Bundesliga champions including the comprehensive 5-0 win over Salzburg in the UEFA Champions League.
While responding to questions ahead of the blockbuster DFB Pokal clash against Bayern Munich, Alonso says Boniface is on the “right track” to recovering from the injury.
“We have hope. He is on the right track, but it is too early to say when he will be back.”
Boniface was in good form for the champions before his injury with 15 goals across all competitions.
