Wrexham Goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo Cleared for Super Eagles Selection

Arthur Okonkwo, the 24-year-old goalkeeper of Nigerian descent currently starring for English Championship club Wrexham, has received official clearance from FIFA to represent the Super Eagles of Nigeria at senior level.

The decision, which ends months of procedural delays, now makes Okonkwo fully eligible for selection by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) following his decision to switch international allegiance from England to Nigeria. The London-born goalkeeper had previously featured for England at various youth levels, including under-15 to under-18 sides.

Okonkwo’s eligibility comes at a key moment for Nigerian football. The Super Eagles will take part in a four-nation invitational tournament in Amman, Jordan, later this month, where they are scheduled to face Iran and Jordan in international friendlies.

Coaches and football fans have widely welcomed the news, seeing Okonkwo’s inclusion as a potential boost to the national side’s goalkeeping options. With Nigeria’s more established goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali currently without a club, Okonkwo could be in line for an early opportunity in the national setup if selected.

At club level, Okonkwo has been in strong form for Wrexham this season, helping the Welsh side compete in the English Championship and marking key personal milestones, including reaching 100 league appearances. His performances have drawn praise from supporters and pundits alike and increased calls for him to make his senior debut for Nigeria.

Born to Nigerian parents in London, Okonkwo first joined the Arsenal academy at age eight and made his senior debut for the Gunners before moving on to Wrexham. His switch of allegiance to Nigeria was discussed with NFF officials during the Unity Cup in London last year and has now been formalised ahead of the international fixtures.

While the NFF has not yet announced his official call-up, the goalkeeper’s clearance opens the door for Okonkwo to compete for Nigeria’s number one jersey and add depth to a squad in transition following their failed bid to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
