Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson has made a surprising choice for this year’s Ballon d’Or winner, snubbing his teammate Rodri in favor of compatriot Vinicius Junior.
Both stars are the two clear frontrunners for the award after an exceptional 2023-24 season.
Vinicius Junior led Real Madrid to La Liga and UEFA Champions League success. At the same time, Rodri was the catalyst for yet another Premier League win before significantly boosting his case with a strong showing for a triumphant Spain at EURO 2024.
Speaking on TNT Sports Brazil, Ederson revealed his support for the Real Madrid star.
“I am rooting for Vini Jr. to win the Ballon d’Or. I hope he wins it.”
Ederson’s loyalty to his Brazilian roots outweighs his club allegiance, as he puts national pride above team ties.
Vinicius Junior will be hoping to end Brazil’s 17-year wait for a Ballon d’Or winner, following in the footsteps of Kaka, who last claimed the award in 2007.
