In a tense encounter at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, Barcelona secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano, a result that propels them back to the top of the LaLiga standings.

Robert Lewandowski’s first-half penalty proved to be the difference in a match filled with drama, VAR controversies, and Rayo’s persistent threats.

Barcelona, aware of the stakes, began the game with intent, dominating possession and probing the Rayo defense. However, Vallecano’s defensive setup was well-organized, making it difficult for Xavi’s men to carve out clear-cut chances.

The breakthrough came in the 35th minute when Iñigo Martínez was brought down inside the box by Pathe Ciss. After a VAR review confirmed the foul, Lewandowski stepped up and coolly converted from the spot, sending Rayo goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski the wrong way.

Despite falling behind, Rayo Vallecano responded with resilience. Their best chance of the half came just before the break when Álvaro García found himself in space, but his effort was well blocked by Jules Koundé. The visitors continued to push for an equalizer in the second half, increasing their intensity in attack.

One of the most controversial moments arrived in the 67th minute when Rayo thought they had equalized through Jorge De Frutos. However, the goal was ruled out for offside interference, much to the frustration of Vallecano’s players and coaching staff.

Moments later, the visitors appealed for a penalty after Abdul Mumin appeared to be fouled inside the Barcelona box, but the referee waved away their protests.

As the match entered its final stages, Barcelona found themselves under increasing pressure. Rayo continued to launch attacks, forcing Wojciech Szczęsny into action on multiple occasions. A late free-kick from Isi Palazón tested the Polish shot-stopper, but he managed to keep his clean sheet intact.

Barcelona held on to secure all three points, a win that sees them climb level with Real Madrid at 51 points, edging ahead on goal ddifference.
