Bendel Insurance secured a narrow win over Abia Warriors on Saturday evening to put the continental ambition of the latter under threat.
Bendel Insurance went into the tie to end a three-game winless run while Avia Warriors were hoping to avoid another road loss.
However, the Umuahia-based club couldn’t leave with a point as they lost by a goal to the host at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.
The first half ended goalless as the visitors kept it tight at the back, hoping to secure at least a point by the end of the 90 minutes.
However, Chinedu Nwosu, the 18-year-old forward scored the only goal of the match to give Bendel Insurance a 1-0 win.
Bendel Insurance move up to seventh momentarily with 49 points pending the outcomes of Sunday’s NPFL matches.
Despite losing, Abia Warriors remain in fourth spot with 52 points but might drop to sixth if Shooting Stars and Nasarawa United get maximum points.
With four matches to the end of the season, the race to get into the continental spots remains quite open for the aforementioned teams to lock down a spot.
