Nigeria suffer huge blow as Osimhen ruled out of FIFA WCQ clash vs South Africa

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have been dealt a devastating blow ahead of their do-or-die 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against South Africa, with star striker Victor Osimhen officially ruled out of the clash.

The injury to the team’s talismanic forward casts a long shadow over their qualification hopes as they prepare for a must-win encounter on foreign soil.

Osimhen’s injury stems from a shin bruise sustained during Saturday’s hard-fought 1-0 victory over Rwanda in Uyo.

The former African Player of the Year was forced to leave the pitch in the first half after a heavy challenge. Despite hopes that the injury was minor, the Super Eagles’ team doctor confirmed the worst on Sunday, stating that Osimhen woke up with discomfort and would not be traveling with the squad to South Africa.

The injury not only sidelines Nigeria’s most potent attacking threat but also forces a significant tactical reshuffle for head coach Eric Chelle.

Osimhen, who was replaced by Cyriel Dessers against Rwanda, will now return to his club, Galatasaray, for further assessment and treatment.

His absence creates a massive void in the Super Eagles’ attack, leaving a heavy burden on the shoulders of other forwards.

The likes of Tolu Arokodare, who scored the crucial winner against Rwanda, and other attacking options such as Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, and Moses Simon will now be relied upon to deliver in this high-stakes encounter.
