Nigeria’s quest for a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been dealt a significant setback, as captain Wilfred Ndidi will miss the decisive playoff final due to suspension.

The Super Eagles secured a commanding 4-1 victory over Gabon in their semi-final clash, but the win was bittersweet.

Ndidi, a pivotal figure in the team, received a yellow card during the match, his second of the qualifying campaign, triggering an automatic one-match ban.

SUSPENSION ALERT!

With Wilfred Ndidi’s yellow card in today’s game, he has now picked up his second caution of the #2026WCQ campaign and will miss Sunday’s final against either Cameroon or Congo DR.

The Besiktas midfielder was instrumental in the triumph against Gabon, dominating the midfield and even providing a crucial assist for Chidera Ejuke’s goal in extra time.

His absence leaves a considerable void in the heart of the Nigerian team, which relies on his leadership and defensive prowess.

Despite the loss of their captain, Nigeria’s attack remained formidable. Akor Adams opened the scoring by capitalizing on a defensive error, before Ejuke netted what would become the winning goal. Napoli striker Victor Osimhen sealed the emphatic victory with a brilliant brace in extra time.

This powerful offensive display has bolstered Nigeria’s confidence, reaffirming their status as one of Africa’s top contenders.

The main concern for coach Eric Chelle will be how the team adapts to the absence of their midfield general in the all-important final on Sunday.
