Ruben Amorim made eight changes, with his focus clearly on United’s Europa League campaign, but it was the visitors who took the lead when Mason Mount turned in from Garnacho’s cross for his first goal of the season.
Brentford, though, were the better side and by half-time they were in front themselves.
Mikkel Damsgaard’s flick was turned into his own net by Luke Shaw, before Kevin Schade rose highest at the back post to head the hosts into the lead.
With 20 minutes to go, Schade again headed beyond Altay Bayindir to double the advantage, and the match was seemingly then put to bed when Yoanna Wissa provided the finishing touch to a lovely Brentford move.
However, two late goals from Garnacho and substitute Amad Diallo gave the visitors hope, but Brentford held on for a crucial win.
