The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that the continent’s most prestigious tournament, the Africa Cup of Nations will now be held every four years starting from 2028, then 2032 onwards.
The announcement comes on the eve of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations as Morocco welcomes the rest of Africa to the 35th edition of the showpiece across six host cities.
Patrice Motsepe, the president of the continent’s football-governing body announced during a news conference on Saturday.
Motsepe said that the 2027 edition of the tournament to be co-hosted by Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya will go on as planned.
However, he noted that the 2029 Africa Cup of Nations will be moved forward to 2028 to accommodate a new tournament – the Africa News League.
“What is new is that…in Africa, there is going to be a competition every year where the best African players who play in Europe and Worldwide will be with us on the continent.”
This means that the next Africa Cup of Nations after the 2028 edition will be in 2032.
The Africa Nations League will commence in 2029 and will consist of all the 54 members of CAF divided into four geographical zones and games will be held during the FIFA windows in September and October before the finals in November.
