Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has revealed that star defender Wesley Fofana could miss the rest of the season with a hamstring injury.
The 24-year-old France centre-back picked up the injury while challenging Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins during the Blues’ 3-0 win against Unai Emery’s men at the start of December.
He had started 12 of Chelsea’s 13 Premier League games until that point and was poised for his best season yet.
After that game, Blues boss Maresca predicted he would be out for “at least three, four, five weeks”.
However, upon further evaluation, the Italian now says his centre-back will be out for a “very long time” in a “big blow”, although does not require surgery yet.
“Unfortunately he could be out for the season,” Maresca said.
“We don’t know exactly but it is a big blow”
The Blues will have to rely on the likes of Alex Disasi and Tosi Adarabioyo to fill the void left by Fofana’s absence and both defenders have failed to impress.
Chelsea will hope to bounce back from their shock defeat to Ipswich Town when they face Crystal Palace this weekend.
