Denzel Dumfries was the best player on the pitch as he led Inter Milan to victory over Atalanta in the semi-finals of the Italian Super Cup.
The Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia hosted the two Serie A heavyweights on Thursday night.
Dumfries played in his natural position as a right wing-back but was a menace in the final third for the league champions.
The Dutch defender scored a brace in brilliant fashion to give Inter Milan a 2-0 victory over Ademola Lookman’s Atalanta.
Inter Milan were quite dominant in the first half but couldn’t convert any of their chances.
Atalanta’s Marco Carnesecchi denied Lautaro Martinez twice in the first half to keep the scoreline at stalemate.
Carnesecchi showed great reflex to stop Federico DiMarco’s shot towards goal.
However, Carnesecchi’s goal was eventually breached from a sublime acrobatic effort from Dumfries to give Inter Milan the lead.
While Atalanta surged forward for an equalizer, they were caught unaware in defense and Dumfries powered a right footed strike into the top-left corner to double the lead.
The introduction of reigning African Footballer of the Year Ademola Lookman, Charles De Ketelaere and Brazilian midfielder Ederson changed the rhythm of the game.
Lookman’s square ball into the box created havoc in Inter Milan’s defense and Ederson pounced on the loose ball to reduce the deficit.
Unfortunately, his goal was ruled for offside after Charles De Ketelaere interacted with the ball while in an offside position.
The match ended in a comfortable 2-0 victory for Inter Milan as look to take on either defending champions Juventus or eternal rival AC Milan in the final on Monday.
