The match itself was a cagey affair, with few clear-cut chances created by either side. Despite the lack of action, the game was played at a fast pace and good intensity. Brighton, missing key attackers Anthony Elanga and Callum Hudson-Odoi, looked the more threatening side.
A controversial VAR decision in the 63rd minute denied Forest a penalty, after Kaoru Mitoma’s arm brought down Elliot Anderson inside the box. The decision sparked a quiet period in the game, with neither side threatening much in front of goal.

The tie went to extra time, where Brighton’s Diego Gomez saw his header spectacularly saved by Matz Sels in the 109th minute. Brighton thought they had won it in the 118th minute, but Pervis Estupinan’s goal was correctly disallowed for offside.
The match ultimately went to penalties, where Forest captain Ryan Yates scored the winning spot-kick to send his side to Wembley. Brighton’s poor penalty-taking, particularly from Jack Hinshelwood and Diego Gomez, proved costly.
