Nigeria’s Falconets began their 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Spain in their opening Group F fixture in Poland on Monday.
Spain took control early and created several chances before taking the lead through Marisa in the first half.
Nigeria improved after conceding and created opportunities to equalise, but Spain goalkeeper Laia kept the Falconets from finding a way back into the game.
Alba Cerrato doubled Spain’s advantage in the second half with a finish into the bottom corner.
The Falconets pushed for a late response but could not find a breakthrough as Spain held on for a clean sheet and all three points.
Nigeria will now turn their attention to their second Group F match against China on Thursday, September 10, before facing New Caledonia in their final group game.
