FIFA introduces halftime show for 2026 World Cup final

In a historic shift for the FIFA World Cup, President Gianni Infantino has announced that the 2026 final will feature a Super Bowl-style halftime show.

This marks the first time such an entertainment segment will be incorporated into the tournament’s climax.

The final is scheduled for July 19, 2026, at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. British band Coldplay, led by Chris Martin, is collaborating with FIFA to curate the artist lineup for the halftime performance.

This initiative is part of a broader partnership with the anti-poverty organization Global Citizen, where Martin serves as an ambassador.

Infantino expressed enthusiasm about the development, stating, “This will be a historic moment for the FIFA World Cup and a show befitting the biggest sporting event in the world.”

He also mentioned plans for a “takeover” of Times Square in New York City during the final weekend, aiming to enhance fan engagement and celebrate the tournament’s conclusion in grand fashion.

Implementing a halftime show presents logistical challenges, as FIFA’s standard halftime interval is 15 minutes, significantly shorter than the Super Bowl’s extended break.

Adjustments may be necessary to accommodate the performance without disrupting the match’s flow.

The 2026 World Cup is notable not only for this entertainment addition but also for its expanded format, featuring 48 teams and matches across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

The inclusion of a halftime show aligns with efforts to broaden the tournament’s appeal and enhance the overall spectator experience.
