Lionel Messi once again proved his clutch credentials, steering Inter Miami to a 2-1 victory over FC Porto in their FIFA Club World Cup group stage clash with a stunning free-kick.
Despite the triumph, Inter Miami manager Javier Mascherano revealed the Argentine icon played through pain, with his participation in doubt due to a quadriceps injury.
“Leo Messi played whilst injured, with the pain he had in his quadriceps, and how he kept running is crazy. His presence was not guaranteed before the game. He’s the player who shows us how to compete.
“His hunger and desire to keep performing – at any level – guides us and shows us the path we need to follow,” Mascherano told AlbicelesteTalk.
Messi, the most decorated footballer ever, boasts an unrivalled trophy haul, including eight Ballon d’Or awards, a FIFA World Cup, Copa América, and multiple UEFA Champions League titles.
The former Barcelona star now has his sights set on adding the revamped FIFA Club World Cup to his glittering collection.
