The Danish Football Association is eager to secure the international future of highly-rated Manchester United youngster Chido Obi-Martin.
The 17-year-old striker, who joined Manchester United from Arsenal last summer, has already made a name for himself with impressive performances and is already pegged as a huge star for the future.
Obi-Martin, born in Denmark to a Danish mother and a Nigerian father, is also eligible to represent England, having played for both English and Danish youth teams.
Former Danish women’s national team coach Kenneth Heiner-Moller, now head of talent at the Danish Football Association, expressed his desire to see Obi-Martin represent Denmark.
“That would be very sad,” Heiner-Møller said, referring to the possibility of losing Obi-Martin to another nation.
“If we were a club, we could offer him a bigger contract, better terms, a bigger car, and a villa, but we are not a club, so we can only offer him to play in a Danish national team shirt. There is not much we can do.”
Heiner-Moller emphasized that Denmark will not try to pressure Obi-Martin into committing to the national team, instead leaving the decision entirely up to the player.
“I hope that Chido will play for the Danish national team, but I can guarantee you that he will never, ever be selected for the A national team only to tie him to Denmark.”
