Former Chelsea midfielder, John Obi Mikel has expressed strong opinions regarding Arsenal’s current ambitions under manager Mikel Arteta, emphasizing that the club should focus on winning the Premier League rather than merely competing.
In a recent episode of his “Obi One Podcast,” Mikel reflected on Arsenal’s 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford—a result that significantly dented their title aspirations, leaving them 15 points adrift of league leaders Liverpool.
He observed that Arteta’s abrupt departure from the post-match press conference indicated a manager under pressure, lacking answers to pressing questions.
While acknowledging Arteta’s efforts in improving the team since his 2019 appointment, Mikel questioned his capacity to lead Arsenal to major triumphs like the Premier League or Champions League.
He stressed that the club should prioritize winning these titles over merely being competitive. Mikel also highlighted a recurring issue with the team’s mentality, noting their tendency to falter during critical phases of the season.
Arsenal has not secured a Premier League title since their unbeaten “Invincibles” season in 2003/04. Mikel’s comments underscore the growing impatience among fans and former players who believe the club must adopt a winning mentality to reclaim its former glory.
