Lionel Messi and Inter Miami’s MLS Playoff run took a hit on Saturday night as they lost the second leg of the quarterfinals to Atlanta United, 2-1, at the Mercedes-Benz Arena.
Atlanta United staged a dramatic comeback, overturning Inter Miami’s first-half lead. David Martínez opened the scoring in the 40th minute, capitalizing on a glaring error by the goalkeeper.
It seemed like smooth sailing for Inter Miami, especially with Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, and Jordi Alba playing well and creating chances at will.
However, Atlanta United turned the tables in the second half.
Derrick Williams equalized in the 58th minute, and Xande Silva sealed the stunning comeback with a stoppage-time winner.
The series is now tied, with the winner advancing to the Eastern Conference semifinals.
The decisive third leg will take place on November 9 at Chase Stadium. Inter Miami will look to regroup and bounce back to keep their playoff hopes alive.
