The night began with Croatia making light work of favourites, France at home, winning 2-0. Ante Budimir and Ivan Perisic scored two first-half goals to stun Didier Deschamps side and leave them with a mountain to climb ahead of the second leg next week.
Next up, Cristiano Ronaldo was silenced and nullified as Portugal lost 1-0 to a gritty, spirited Denmark side.

Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund scored a late winner to condemn Portugal to defeat and set the stage for an exciting second leg.
Elsewhere, the Netherlands and Spain played out an entertaining 2-2 draw, with Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino scoring a late equaliser after Jorrel Hato was sent off for the Dutch.
Finally, Germany defeated Italy 2-1 at the San Siro to gain a solid advantage heading into the second leg next week. Sandro Tonali opened the scoring after 9 minutes but Tim Kleindienst and Leon Goretzka stole the win for Julian Naggelsman’s men.
