Matchweek 2 of the Premier League delivered goals, late drama and no shortage of twists across today’s fixtures, headlined by Newcastle United’s 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Anthony Elanga broke the deadlock for the visitors before Joseph Willock added a second, sealing Newcastle’s first league win of the season and leaving Spurs still searching for theirs after an open, closely fought contest.
At Anfield, Liverpool were held to a pulsating 2-2 draw by Nottingham Forest. Dan Ndoye put the visitors ahead early through a slick move involving Morgan Gibbs-White, only for Alexander Isak to level things up for the Reds after the break. Gibbs-White then restored Forest’s lead from the penalty spot before Víctor Muñoz produced a stunning strike on his Anfield debut to rescue a point for Andoni Iraola’s side.
Down on the south coast, Bournemouth looked set to claim their first home win of the season after Alex Scott’s clinical finish, set up superbly by Evanilson, put the Cherries ahead before the break. Everton, though, refused to go quietly and were rewarded deep into stoppage time when James Tarkowski popped up with a dramatic 91st-minute equaliser to snatch a 1-1 draw.
Both draws leave their respective home sides frustrated after seeing promising positions slip away late on, while Forest and Everton will take heart from their fighting spirit on the road.
Newcastle’s win, by contrast, gives Mattias Jaissle’s side something concrete to build on after a mixed start, and hands Tottenham plenty to work through as they look to turn performances into results.
With the day’s fixtures underlining just how unpredictable the early rounds of the new season have been, all eyes now turn to the rest of the weekend’s action as the title race begins to take shape.
