Nigeria crush Benin 4–0 as fans react to World Cup Qualifier rout

Nigeria reignited their World Cup qualifying hopes with a dominant 4–0 win over Benin in Uyo.

Victor Osimhen opened the scoring in the third minute and added a second before halftime, taking control of the match early. He completed his hat-trick shortly after the restart with a powerful header, while Frank Onyeka struck in stoppage time to seal the emphatic result.

Samuel Chukwueze assisted two of Osimhen’s goals against Benin Republic.

The victory lifted Nigeria level on points with Benin and ahead on goal difference, securing a place in the CAF playoff round, rather than automatic qualification.

While many fans celebrated the performance and hailed Osimhen’s display as decisive and overdue, reactions were not entirely without criticism.

Some questioned the continued selection of William Troost-Ekong in central defence, arguing that the back line could be more balanced with alternative options.

Others stressed that the win should not distract from the fact that Nigeria still has to navigate a high-pressure playoff to reach the World Cup.

Supporters described the result as a relief after an inconsistent qualifying run, but insisted that consistency and tactical clarity will be needed in the next phase.

Analysts noted that Benin, who came into the match on the brink of a historic qualification, were unable to cope with Nigeria’s intensity and early goals. The defeat ended their hopes of a first-ever World Cup appearance.

Attention now shifts to the playoff stage, where Nigeria must build on this momentum while addressing the issues that have sparked debate among fans.
