The Super Eagles of Nigeria will rekindle their age-long rivalry against the Black Stars of Ghana as the Unity Cup returns this summer after 21 years.
Nigeria won the first edition of the invitational tournament in 2004 with victories over Jamaica and the Republic of Ireland.
Former Super Eagles strikers Bartholemeu Ogbeche, Obafemi Martins, and John Ukata scored Nigeria’s five goals in the tournament.
Ogbeche’s brace and Martins’ goal gave Nigeria a three-nil win in the first match against the Republic of Ireland, while Utaka and Martins scored in the two-nil win over Jamaica.
This year’s edition will feature four countries from the United Kingdom’s Commonwealth countries, including Ghana, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago.
Nigeria will take on Ghana in the second semi-final on Wednesday, May 28, while Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago will lock horns in the first. This year’s edition will feature a third-place match.
The Super Eagles will also take on Russia in another friendly in June as they prepare for the September FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa.
