Nigerian players were yet again outstanding across Europe this weekend. From a Philip Otele first goal in Germany to Taiwo Awoniyi returning to the score sheet. Here are the Nigerian goalscorers over the weekend
Lookman Makes History in Madrid Derby
Ademola Lookman etched his name into the record books during a thrilling Madrid derby at the Santiago Bernabéu. Lookman opened the scoring for Atlético Madrid in the 33rd minute, becoming the first Nigerian player ever to score in the Madrid derby.
Despite his historic contribution, Atlético eventually fell to a narrow 3-2 defeat against Real Madrid. Lookman, who joined Atlético from Atalanta in February 2026, has already recorded nine goal involvements in just 14 appearances for the Spanish giants.
Nottingham Forest’s Nigerian Triple Threat
Nottingham Forest celebrated a massive weekend fueled by Nigerian excellence in both the Premier League and the Women’s Super League
In the Premier League, Forest stunned Tottenham Hotspur with a 3-0 away victory. Ola Aina was a defensive rock, while Taiwo Awoniyi came off the bench to round off the scoring in the 87th minute, celebrating with a “God is the Greatest!” undershirt.
Super Falcons striker Joy Omewa continued her blistering form for Nottingham Forest Women. She scored her second goal for the club in the 28th minute, leading her side to a 2-0 home league victory over Ipswich Town at the City Ground.
Philip Otele’s Landmark in Germany
New Super Eagles invitee Philip Otele made history in the Bundesliga, becoming the first Nigerian ever to score for Hamburger SV in the German top flight.
Otele opened the scoring in the 19th minute against Borussia Dortmund, though HSV ultimately suffered a 3-2 comeback defeat at Signal Iduna Park.
