For the first time in the club’s history, Borussia Dortmund can boast of having two players with Igbo heritage in its ranks — a moment that German‑born Nigerian midfielder Felix Nmecha describes as “very special.”
The arrival of Carney Chukwuemeka from Chelsea on loan has united the pair at the German giants, making this a landmark event for the Igbo community across Europe.
Speaking to Afro Ballers during the FIFA Club World Cup, Nmecha reflected on the significance of the moment. “It’s very special. We’ve never had two players of Igbo descent playing for Borussia Dortmund at the same time before,” he said.
Born in Hamburg to a German mother and an Igbo father, Nmecha spent much of his childhood in England following his family’s move in 2007. Yet, despite growing up in Europe, he has always felt a deep bond with his heritage.
“I’m very connected and close to my roots,” he explained. “My dad’s Igbo and we share that passion for our people. It’s nice to have another Igbo and Nigerian player to play together with here. I’m very connected to the music, the food. I’ve tried to learn a few words here and there, but I think I need to learn a few more.”
Nmecha has represented both England and Germany at youth level and received his first senior call‑up for the German national team in 2023.
Meanwhile, Chukwuemeka, who arrived from Chelsea in February 2025, is on loan with an option for Dortmund to make the move permanent.
With both stars now in the Bundesliga and competing at the FIFA Club World Cup, their joint presence goes beyond the pitch.
For many Nigerians and especially the Igbo community, seeing the pair together is a reminder that heritage and identity can flourish, no matter where one plays. It is a chapter that celebrates belonging, culture, and the pride of representing a heritage far from home.
