Esther Okoronkwo delivered a sensational performance as Nigeria’s Super Falcons came from behind to defeat hosts Morocco 3–2 and claim a record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title on Saturday night in Rabat.
Trailing 2–0 at halftime following goals from Morocco’s Ghizlane Chebbak and Sanaâ Mssoudy, Nigeria looked in trouble. But Okoronkwo sparked a remarkable second-half turnaround, beginning with a calmly taken penalty in the 63rd minute after a VAR review confirmed a foul on Jennifer Echegini.
The equaliser came just eight minutes later, with Okoronkwo turning provider by setting up Folashade Ijamilusi to finish from close range.
With momentum firmly in Nigeria’s favour, Okoronkwo delivered again in the 88th minute, whipping in a dangerous free-kick that Echegini converted to seal the dramatic comeback.
Her decisive contributions — one goal and two assists — earned her the Woman of the Match award and solidified her status as one of the tournament’s breakout stars.
The victory not only gave Nigeria their tenth WAFCON crown but also highlighted the depth and resilience of the squad under coach Justin Madugu.
