The Premier League match day 27 fixtures felt more like a roller-coaster than an early-season routine, Aston Villa and Chelsea dropped valuable points while Manchester City and Brighton celebrated a historic milestone and the battle for Europe and survival continued to tighten.
Manchester City needed all three points against stubborn Newcastle United in order to close the gap between them and Chelsea, however, Chelsea failed to pose a significant threat in the top 4 race after drawing Burnley today.
At Villa Park, the hosts looked on course for all three points after Leeds took a shock lead in the 31st minute. Anton Stach stepped up to curl a brilliant free-kick past Emiliano Martínez, leaving the crowd stunned and Leeds with momentum.
Villa piled on the pressure after the break, pressing for a way back into the contest. Chances came and went, including a disallowed goal for offside and a couple of half-chances that Leeds’ defence narrowly cut out. The game looked set to slip away from Villa’s title hopes; until substitute Tammy Abraham pounced in the 88th minute, meeting a whipped cross to head home and spark wild celebrations among the home fans.
The draw leaves Villa still chasing the top but with precious ground dropped at a crucial stage. For Leeds, the point feels like a victory and keeps their push away from the relegation zone alive.

Chelsea fans at Stamford Bridge were buoyant inside five minutes, as João Pedro volleyed home a brilliant finish in the 4th minute to put the hosts ahead. The home side dominated early exchanges, probing and slicing through Burnley’s defence.
But the game turned sharply just past the hour mark when centre-back Wesley Fofana was shown a second yellow and consequently sent off, leaving Chelsea to defend with ten men. Burnley sensed blood and rallied fiercely, carving chances and keeping Chelsea pinned back.
Their persistence paid off in stoppage time. A deep corner caused chaos in the Blues’ box and Zian Flemming reacted quickest to score in the 90+3rd minute, snatching a dramatic point for the visitors. The final whistle sparked mixed emotions: excited Burnley fans celebrating a priceless point while Chelsea supporters lamented two points lost from a winning position.
Meanwhile at Brentford Community Stadium, veteran James Milner etched his name deeper into Premier League lore. The 40-year-old midfielder made a record 654th appearance to overtake the league’s all-time mark, helping Brighton to a comfortable 2–0 victory.
Brighton opened the scoring in the 30th minute through Douglas Gómez, who fired low into the corner after a slick build-up. Just before half-time, Danny Welbeck doubled the lead in the first minute of added time with a calm finish after a cut-back from the right flank. The second half saw Brighton manage the game expertly, closing it out to take the three points and give Milner a fitting stage for his record-setting appearance.
At the London Stadium, West Ham and Bournemouth played out a tight stalemate. Chances were at a premium, with both sides battling in midfield and rarely carving clear openings. Despite spirited play and spells of pressure from West Ham, neither side could find the breakthrough.
For West Ham, the point does little to ease their fight against the drop, while Bournemouth extend their unbeaten run and head into tonight’s big fixture with confidence.
Meanwhile, Manchester City kept their Premier League title hopes very much alive with a hard-fought 2–1 win over Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium this evening, in a match full of early momentum shifts, clinical finishing and late pressure that kept fans on the edge of their seats.
City opened the scoring in the early stages through emerging young forward Nico O’Reilly, whose confidence and composure shone as he fired home in the 14th minute after clever build-up play from Rayan Aït-Nouri and Erling Haaland. City looked to be in control, but Newcastle responded just eight minutes later when Lewis Hall cut inside and drove a left-foot shot beyond Gianluigi Donnarumma to level the game in the 22nd minute.
City regained the lead shortly after with a second from O’Reilly in the 27th minute, connecting brilliantly with a floated centre from Antoine Marmoush to put the hosts back in front. From there, both teams traded chances; City pushing to extend their advantage and Newcastle probing for an equaliser, with the Magpies nearly drawing level late on but denied by resolute defending and a couple of last-ditch blocks from the home side.
The victory sees City close the gap on league leaders as the title race intensifies, while Newcastle’s spirited performance offered plenty of positives despite leaving Manchester empty-handed.
