In a gripping climax to the 2024/25 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season, Remo Stars etched their name into the history books by clinching their first-ever league title, while the final whistle confirmed the relegation of former champions Akwa United and Heartland FC.
Remo Stars Make History
Despite a 3-0 defeat to Bayelsa United on the final day, Remo Stars finished the season on top with 71 points, one of the most consistent and balanced teams throughout the campaign.
The Ikenne-based side, who had come close in recent seasons, finally overcame the final hurdle to become NPFL champions for the first time in their history.
Their triumph drew international attention, with FIFA President Gianni Infantino extending congratulations to the club, describing the victory as “a testament to hard work and determination.”
Relegation Drama Unfolds
At the opposite end of the table, heartbreak unfolded for Akwa United and Heartland FC. In a high-stakes encounter in Owerri, Heartland managed a 2-1 win over Akwa United, but both teams ultimately fell short of safety.
Heartland’s victory was not enough to lift them out of the drop zone due to other unfavorable results, while Akwa United’s loss sealed their descent despite their recent title success in 2021.
Joining them in the relegation zone are Sunshine Stars and Lobi Stars, who also failed to gather enough points on the final day.
