Step up or out! Werder Bremen coach tells Boniface

Horst Steffen, the head coach of Werder Bremen, has told Victor Boniface to improve on his performance as he continues to struggle in front of goal.

The Super Eagles striker featured for about an hour in Bremen’s 1- 1 draw away at Mainz on Saturday afternoon.

Boniface was largely ineffective in the tie before he left the pitch for 21-year-old German forward Keke Topp.

While speaking after the match, Steffen told the media Victor Boniface can do better than his current offerings.

He tried to hold onto the ball up front. Today I thought to myself: Come on, he can do even better,” the coach said, as quoted by Bild.

Horst Steffen has not hidden his opinion on the striker since he arrived on loan from Bayer Leverkusen.

In the loss to Frieburg recently, the German coach said Boniface needs to work on his positional awareness.

“He was too ‘everywhere’ for me. He should definitely be more centrally located. It wasn’t how I wanted it.”

However, Steffen says Boniface needs time to return to his goal-scoring form.

“He is still on his way, but it’s a long one.” Victor Boniface is yet to score in six matches for Werder Bremen, but had an assist on his debut appearance.
