Brown Ideye, a Super Eagles icon and key member of Nigeria’s 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) triumph, has announced his retirement from professional football at age 36.

The announcement, made on social media platform X, brings an end to a journey that spanned multiple continents and endeared him to several fanbases, most especially Nigerians.

Born on October 10, 1988, Ideye began his career in Nigeria with Bayelsa United and Ocean Boys before moving to Europe in 2008 with Neuchâtel Xamax in Switzerland.

Ideye also played in France, England (West Bromwich Albion), Turkey, Greece, Spain, and, most recently, Enyimba in the NPFL, where he faced challenges like a modest N7,000 daily meal allowance, as he revealed in an interview.

Internationally, Ideye earned 27 caps for Nigeria, scoring six goals, and played a vital role in the 2013 AFCON victory under coach Stephen Keshi.
Reflecting on his career, Ideye expressed gratitude to Nigeria, his agents, coaches, teammates, and fans for shaping his journey. He called his retirement “shocking” after 20 years in the game, leaving a legacy as one of Nigeria’s finest strikers.
