It was a sensational weekend for Nigerian footballers across Europe’s top leagues as the Super Eagles’ strike force delivered a masterclass in clinical finishing.
From the high-stakes atmosphere of the English Premier League to the fervent stadiums of the Turkish Süper Lig, Nigeria’s finest found the back of the net to secure vital points for their respective clubs.
Iwobi’s Stunner Sinks Spurs
In London, Alex Iwobi stole the headlines at Craven Cottage on Sunday. The versatile midfielder doubled Fulham’s lead in the 34th minute of their 2–1 victory over a struggling Tottenham Hotspur.
After a slick exchange with Harry Wilson, Iwobi unleashed a thunderous side-footed strike from 18 yards that clipped the inside of the post on its way past Guglielmo Vicario.
The goal, already being hailed as a “Goal of the Season” contender, marked Iwobi’s fourth league strike of the campaign and helped move Fulham up to 9th in the table. Fellow Nigerians Calvin Bassey and Samuel Chukwueze also featured in the historic win, with Bassey playing the full 90 minutes.
Osimhen Reaches Double Figures
On Saturday, Victor Osimhen continued his dominant run in Turkey, leading Galatasaray to a 3–1 home win against Alanyaspor. The reigning African Footballer of the Year was involved in nearly every attacking move, providing a crucial assist for Lucas Torreira before sealing the result himself in the 83rd minute.
Exploiting a defensive lapse by the Alanyaspor goalkeeper, Osimhen tapped home his 10th league goal of the season. The victory keeps the “Lions” firmly at the top of the Süper Lig standings with 58 points.
Trabzonspor’s Nigerian Double Act
The Turkish league saw even more Nigerian brilliance at Papara Park, where Trabzonspor defeated Fatih Karagümrük 3–1 on Saturday. Paul Onuachu opened the scoring in the 20th minute, glancing home a cross to record his 18th goal in just 21 appearances this season.
With this strike, Onuachu set a new club record by scoring in six consecutive league matches.
The second half belonged to Chibuike Nwaiwu, who produced a stunning three-minute brace. Nwaiwu found the net in the 47th and 50th minutes, the latter assisted by Onuachu to ensure Trabzonspor remained in 3rd place.
As the European season enters its final stretch, the form of these stars will provide a massive boost for the Super Eagles ahead of upcoming international assignments. For now, the “Nigerian Wave” continues to crash through Europe’s top divisions
