Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a deal in principle with Newcastle United for midfielder Sandro Tonali, with the Italian set to join for a fee in excess of £100 million. Personal terms are already in place between player and club, and the two clubs have now reached an agreement on the transfer fee.
Tottenham had an initial £80m offer for the 26-year-old rejected by Newcastle, who held out for a fee north of £100m before the two sides settled on a package that meets the Magpies’ valuation. The move will shatter Tottenham’s previous transfer record of £65m, set by Dominic Solanke, with Tonali set to sign a long-term contract worth around £275,000 a week.
Roberto De Zerbi’s push to work with his compatriot has been central to Tottenham winning the race for Tonali’s signature, with the pair said to have held positive personal talks. Manchester City had also been linked with a late move for the midfielder, but Spurs have emerged as the frontrunners.
Newcastle signed Tonali from AC Milan for around £60m in 2023, meaning the north London club’s fee would represent a significant profit for the Magpies. The Italian has been a mainstay for Eddie Howe’s side since returning from a betting-related suspension.
With the fee now agreed in principle, the next step is for Tonali to undergo a medical before the transfer is finalized. Neither club has issued an official statement confirming completion of the deal at the time of writing.
