U-20 WC: Drama for Chile, delight for Japan and Spain as Brazil crash out

Hosts, Chile narrowly advanced to the next round of the FIFA U-20 World Cup despite a 2-1 defeat to Egypt, progressing thanks to a superior team conduct score after both sides finished level on points.

Javier Carcoma’s early strike put the hosts ahead, but Egypt hit back with headers from Ahmed Abdin and a late free-kick stunner from Omar Khedr.

Despite the loss, Chile’s lower disciplinary tally (-5 to Egypt’s -7) proved decisive. Egypt can still hope to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams.

Japan completed a flawless group stage with a commanding win over New Zealand, who are now eliminated. Kosei Ogura opened the scoring with a thunderous long-range effort before a Jayden Smith own goal and Hisatsugu Ishii’s finish sealed victory for the dominant Asian side.

Spain edged out Brazil 1-0 to leapfrog them in the standings and send the South Americans home. Iker Bravo netted the decisive goal after combining with Pablo Garcia early in the second half, while goalkeeper Fran Gonzalez made several key saves to preserve the lead.

Finally, Mexico secured progression with a 1-0 win over Morocco, courtesy of a second-half penalty from Gilberto Mora after a handball in the box.

Morocco briefly thought they had equalised, but an offside flag denied them. Mexico now face hosts Chile in the last 16, while Morocco await a third-placed opponent.
