European football governing body, UEFA has issued a statement on Julian Alvarez’s disallowed penalty kick against Real Madrid in the second round of the Champions League on Wednesday.
Julian Alvarez converted his spot kicks during the shootout against the defending champions but was ruled out after a VAR review.
The Argentine striker was judged to have taken a double touch en route to taking the penalty on the night.
Atletico Madrid lost to Real Madrid 4-1 on penalties but the cancelled penalty kick dominated the headlines.
UEFA in a statement claimed that the decision to rule out the penalty is in accordance to the rule book. The body, however admitted the touch was minimal.
Atlético de Madrid enquired with UEFA over the incident, which led to the disallowance of the kick from the penalty mark taken by Julián Alvarez at the end of yesterday’s UEFA Champions League match against Real Madrid”.
“Although minimal, the player made contact with the ball using his standing foot before kicking it, as shown in the attached video clip. Under the current rule (Laws of the Game, Law 14.1), the VAR had to call the referee signalling that the goal should be disallowed”.
In addition, UEFA says it will now hold discussions with FIFA and IFAB in order to review the law in scenarios where the touch isn’t deliberate.
“UEFA will enter discussions with FIFA and IFAB to determine whether the rule should be reviewed in cases where a double touch is clearly unintentional”.
