Manchester United Legends and Celtic Legends faced off in an annual charity match at Old Trafford on Sunday, September 7, 2024.
Any earnings from the match between the group of United superstars and their Celtic counterparts will go to the Manchester United Foundation.
Manchester United put together a lineup of outstanding players, including Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov, Michael Carrick, Antonio Valencia, and Paul Scholes, under the guidance of the great Bryan Robson.
Paul Lambert, the former manager of Norwich City and Aston Villa, coached Celtic Legends, which included Charlie Mulgrew, Georgios Samaras, Gary Hooper, and Stiliyan Petrov.
Celtic beat Manchester United legends on penalties
Wayne Rooney gave Manchester United the lead in the 42nd minute with a curled free kick from outside the box.
Then in the second half, Stiliyan Petrov was given too much time to make the play, which let Gary Hooper tie the score.
Ninety minutes in, Hooper cancelled out Rooney’s first-half free kick, sending the game into a penalty shootout.
The Celtic legends went on to win the penalty shootout 5–4.
In recent years, these kinds of fixtures have contributed millions of pounds to charitable causes.
